Signs, Signs, Everywhere Are Signs
Do this don’t do that, can’t you read the signs as the song goes. Are you a person who looks for signs? Often when we are trying to make decisions in our lives we look around hoping for a sign that will tell us which way to go, what to do.
We have a tendency to look outside of ourselves for the answers to our lives. I know at times, especially at challenging times in my own life, I would love a clear sign. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just say okay, give me a sign and a sign shows up and clearly says, Okay Lorie here is what I want you to do: take that job, leave that relationship, take a chance, move to Vancouver.
We are conditioned from when we are very young to listen to others, pay attention, and do as we are told. Not often are we told, “I know you will figure it out.” “I believe that you will know what to do.” “Take some time and really listen to yourself and the answer will come.” “Trust your intuition, you know what to do.”
Instead, we hear, “This is what I think you should do.” “Well if I were you this is what I would do.” “You should do as I say (not always as I do) because I am older and know what is best for you.”
Well-meaning caregivers try to tell us what they think we should do. Rather than support us in cultivating a deeper connection with ourselves so we develop wisdom that is borne out of listening to our own inner voice, and yes making mistakes at times so we learn more clearly what is right and wrong for us.
It takes practice to really listen and discern our inner truth. And, the more we listen and learn to trust our inner knowing, the more we are living lives that truly resonate with who we are. The more authentic our lives are the more peaceful, happy and fulfilled we will be.
The interesting thing is that when we get good at listening to ourselves, a sign may show up, and when it does, we do not question whether it is or isn’t a sign, because it confirms what we already know and feel inside.
